About time in Mumbai
India uses one time zone for the whole country, five and a half hours ahead of UTC — one of the few national offsets that is not a whole number of hours. The half-hour split was a compromise between the two meridians historically used by Bombay and Calcutta. Because the country spans roughly two geographic zones, the sun rises well over an hour earlier in the north-east than in Mumbai.
